Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 241A Speedmaster is a finely crafted semi-automatic rimfire rifle chambered in .22 Short, and it stands as a direct descendant of the legendary John Browning design lineage. Produced between 1935 and 1951, the Model 241A was Remington’s answer to lightweight, takedown-style rimfire rifles built for accuracy, portability, and smooth cycling. With its 24-inch blued barrel, bead blade front sight, and adjustable rear sight, the rifle offers precision for target shooting and small game hunting, while the smooth hardwood stock gives it a classic American sporting rifle appearance. Its action is clean and reliable, feeding .22 Short cartridges with ease through its semi-automatic blowback design.

What sets the Model 241 apart from other rimfire rifles of its era is its ingenious takedown mechanism. This design allows the barrel to be removed from the receiver without tools, making the rifle compact and ideal for transport. Unlike the more visible barrel tensioning ring used in the Browning SA-22, the Model 241 features a more concealed and complex dual-sided barrel nut system, which adjusts the fit between the barrel and receiver from within the front of the receiver. The system requires careful adjustment and understanding, involving an internal locking slug and hidden set screw, accessible only once the barrel is detached. Improper handling of this mechanism can lead to damage, but when used correctly, it allows for a secure and precise lockup between the barrel and receiver, maintaining the rifle’s legendary accuracy and reliability. The Model 241A is not only a technical marvel of its time but also a testament to Remington’s craftsmanship during an era when quality and function were paramount. With a total of just over 107,000 units produced across both .22 Short and Long Rifle chamberings, it remains a cherished firearm among collectors and rimfire enthusiasts. Its legacy continues to live on in modern adaptations, such as the Browning SA-22, but for many, the Model 241A’s unique features and historical pedigree make it one of the most distinctive and respected rimfire rifles of the 20th century.
