Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece Pre-Model 17 (Post War, 3rd Model) is a superb example of late 1940s craftsmanship and precision engineering. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, this double/single-action revolver was designed for serious target shooters and small-game hunters alike. Built on the square-butt K-frame—specifically the target variant with five screws—this model features a 6-inch pinned barrel, a fluted six-shot cylinder with a nominal length of 1.6", and a rich blued finish. This 3rd Model was produced in the immediate post-WWII years and marked the beginning of the K-series serial prefix, starting at K101. Early examples, like this one, are notable for their narrow, tapered, serrated barrel ribs, which were later replaced by a full-width rib with no taper. The revolver’s precision aiming setup includes a 1/8" Patridge front sight and a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight for fine windage and elevation adjustments.

A standout feature of this K-22 is its finely checkered walnut grips, inlaid with silver S&W medallions and marked by a diamond around the escutcheon screw—a signature touch of that period. It includes a six-groove backstrap and forestrap, a .375" wide checkered hammer, and a .265" wide serrated trigger with an adjustable stop, all contributing to its refined handling and controllability. Standard markings include “Smith & Wesson” on the left side of the barrel and “22 Long Rifle CTG” on the right, with the iconic S&W trademark stamped on the sideplate. Beginning in 1948, frames were also stamped with the full four-line address on the right side above the trigger guard. Serial numbers can be found in multiple locations, including the butt, yoke, barrel flat, and extractor star, reflecting the meticulous quality control of the era. Many early production models were shipped in a gold box with non-acidic paper and a black knurled-handled screwdriver. As the direct predecessor to the Model 17, this revolver stands as a classic example of postwar American firearm design.
