Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this sought-after semi-automatic shotgun for a penny-start auction; this is the Browning Auto-5!

Production of the Browning Auto-5 was temporarily halted in 1940 due to the German occupation of Belgium, ending initial manufacturing runs at serial number 224,596 for 12-gauge and 126,175 for 16-gauge models. Made in Herstal, Belgium, from 1903 to 1940, the A-5's importation resumed in 1946 once post-war operations stabilized. This particular example was manufactured in 1949, during the early years of Browning's renewed partnership with FN, marking a significant chapter in the shotgun's storied production history.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Auto-5, commonly known as the A5, stands as one of the most iconic and historically significant semi-automatic shotguns ever produced. Originally designed by the legendary John M. Browning, the Auto-5 was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun, revolutionizing the market upon its debut in the early 1900s. Its distinctive humpback receiver not only gives it an unmistakable profile but also serves a functional purpose by extending the sighting plane for more accurate shooting. The long recoil-operated action—where the barrel and bolt recoil together before the bolt stays back and the barrel returns forward—was innovative for its time and helped define the performance and reliability of the A5 in both field and tactical use. Over the decades, the Browning A5 was produced in a variety of gauges and configurations, serving hunters, sport shooters, and even military users around the world. Its robust design, quality craftsmanship, and reliability under harsh conditions earned it a loyal following. Browning continued to refine the A5 until production ceased in the late 1990s, although a modern version using a different short-recoil system was later introduced. Original Auto-5s are now highly sought after by collectors, especially early Belgian-made models and those with special engravings or limited-edition features. Whether used in upland game hunting, waterfowl blinds, or preserved as part of a historical collection, the Auto-5 remains a testament to John Browning's enduring genius and the evolution of shotgun technology.
