Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 21 is a prestigious and highly regarded side-by-side shotgun that has earned a reputation for its quality craftsmanship and durability. Initially produced from 1931 to 1959, approximately 30,000 Model 21 shotguns were made, establishing it as a classic in the world of fine firearms. The gun was designed to compete with high-end makers like Parker and Fox, with the intention of offering a reliable and elegant alternative for discerning shooters. Production ceased in 1960, but the Model 21 continued to be produced in limited numbers at the Winchester Custom Shop until its retirement in 1991. Today, production of the Model 21 continues under license by Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company, allowing the legacy of this iconic shotgun to endure. Throughout its history, the Model 21 was chambered in popular gauges such as 12, 16, and 20, with the extremely rare .410 bore and 28-gauge variants further adding to its desirability among collectors.

The Model 21’s action is a traditional break or hinge design, a hallmark of quality double-barrel shotguns. The process of manufacturing these shotguns is meticulous, requiring skilled labor to perfectly join the barrels and ensure identical shot convergence, which contributes to its reputation as a near-custom-made firearm. The shotgun’s production was labor-intensive, especially given the attention to detail required to produce such a high-quality piece. During its original production run, the Model 21 was available in various grades, with each grade offering different features in terms of wood quality, barrel configuration, and finishes. The Standard Grade featured select grade walnut stocks and offered options such as straight or pistol grip configurations. Barrel lengths ranged from 26 to 32 inches, and the trigger plates were often stamped with the name of the grade, further reinforcing the shotgun’s sense of bespoke craftsmanship. The Model 21 remains a favorite among collectors, with its rarity and craftsmanship making it a highly sought-after addition to any collection of fine firearms.
