Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Colt invented their first aluminum-alloy-framed pistol, and they called it the Colt Commander. Later, Colt introduced an all-steel version called the Combat Commander and renamed the aluminum-framed pistol the Lightweight Commander. Chambered for the .38 Super, this was Colt's first compact/lightweight version of their famous 1911 line of pistols. The Lightweight Commander was introduced in 1949, partly in response to the military's desire for a lighter, smaller handgun. It features a high-strength alloy frame and a shorter slide and barrel. This is a fairly early example, being manufactured in 1952.
