Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 90 is a distinguished over-under shotgun known for its craftsmanship, reliability, and versatility. Manufactured from 1937 to 1958, it was offered in a wide range of gauges—including 12, 16, 20, and .410 bore—as well as various barrel lengths and choke configurations to suit different shooting styles and game. Early production models featured ventilated ribs between the barrels, while later versions introduced around 1949 transitioned to solid ribs for a more streamlined and rigid barrel design. The bead front sight aids in quick target acquisition, while the break-action design allows for fast, intuitive loading and unloading. The checkered walnut stock adds both elegance and a secure grip for enhanced shooting comfort. Notably, the Model 90 also served as the basis for Sears-branded shotguns: it was initially marketed under the “Ranger” name before World War II and later rebranded as the J.C. Higgins Model 103.350 in the postwar years. Some of these Sears models were even marked “Marlin” on the receiver, confirming their origin.

These firearms were respected for their quality and affordability, particularly among rural and working-class Americans. Marlin Firearms—long known for their semi-automatic and lever-action rifles—produced a diverse range of shotguns during this period, with the Model 90 standing out as a testament to their attention to detail and design. Though Marlin later experienced multiple ownership transitions—including acquisition by Remington Outdoor Company and ultimately Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 2020—the Model 90 remains a celebrated piece among collectors and enthusiasts, representing the enduring legacy of Marlin’s shotgun craftsmanship.
