The Colt Woodsman is a semi-automatic pistol designed by John Moses Browning and manufactured by the U.S. Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1915 to 1977. The pistol underwent three distinct series of frame design changes: series one from 1915 to 1941, series two from 1947 to 1955, and series three from 1955 to 1977. In 1948, Colt resumed production of the Woodsman with the same three models, but built on a longer and heavier frame. The newer models also featured a magazine safety, automatic slide stop, and magazine release located at the rear of the trigger guard. Additionally, Colt introduced a less expensive model called the Challenger, which had fixed sights and a magazine release located near the bottom aft side of the grip.
