Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Industria Armi Galesi is an Italian firearms manufacturer established in 1910 by Nicola Galesi. It was founded in Brescia, Italy. The company primarily manufactured small, vest-pocket-style pistols. The pistols produced by Industria Armi Galesi were chambered for the .22-Long Rifle, .25-ACP, or the .32-ACP cartridge. They were designed to compete with vest-pocket style pistols produced by Colt Manufacturing and FN Browning.
The Galesi family of Brescia, Italy, has a rich history in weapons manufacturing. In 1910, Nicola Galesi began his own firearms manufacturing firm he could pass to future generations. With his manufacturing facility located in Brescia, Nicola Galesi began Galesi Industria Armi.
Industria Armi Galesi manufactured a variety of pistols, rifles, and revolvers. However, its manufacturing efforts focused mainly on the production of small, vest-pocket pistols based on the designs and patents of John Moses Browning. Industria Armi Galesi released its first pistol in 1914. The Galesi Brevetto 5.
Modeled after the FN Browning M1906, the Galesi Brevetto 5 is semi-automatic, blowback-operated, magazine-fed, and chambered for the .25-ACP (6.35MM Browning) cartridge. The significant difference between Browning's design and the Galesi model is the barrel. The Galesi Brevetto 5 is equipped with a fixed barrel, not found in the Browning design. The fixed barrel is more common to Walther pistols of the same era.
By 1924, Industria Armi Galesi employed twenty-five workers in the manufacturing facility operated by hydroelectric power. In 1930, Nicola Galesi received a patent for another small, vest-pocket-style pistol. The Galesi Model 9 was released the same year. Some consider the Galesi Model 9 nothing more than the Galesi Brevetto 5 with a longer barrel. However, the Galesi Model 9 was offered in .22-Long Rifle and .32-ACP, while the Brevetto 5 was only offered in .25-ACP.
Industri Armi Galesi exported the majority of its production to the United States. Americans found the small pistols to be reliable and well made. Jerry Lee Lewis was known to carry his trusty Galesi pistol when he traveled across the county for his performances. During the 1960s, nearly all handguns produced by Industria Armi Galesi were sent to the United States.
In 1968, the United States Congress passed the Gun Control Act of 1968. This legislature placed restrictions on the importation of these types of pistols produced by Industria Armi Galesi. Without the revenue generated by sales in the United States, Industria Armi Galesi experienced financial problems. As a result, the company closed its doors for good in 1991.
