Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 722 in .244 Remington stands as a hallmark of mid-20th-century American rifle design, representing the transition to more affordable and highly accurate bolt-action sporting rifles. Produced between 1948 and 1961, the Model 722 was the short-action companion to the longer Model 721, both of which laid the groundwork for what would later become the legendary Remington 700 series. This specific example features a 26-inch blued barrel, offering exceptional velocity and stability for long-range accuracy—a key advantage for the .244 Remington cartridge. Engineered as a varmint and light-game round, the .244 Remington (also known as the 6mm Remington) delivers a flat trajectory, high velocity, and mild recoil, making it an ideal choice for precision shooters and hunters alike. It’s essentially a necked-down version of the .257 Roberts, offering excellent ballistic performance in a manageable package.

The rifle’s walnut stock, complete with fine checkering on the forearm, reflects the craftsmanship of its era, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional grip. Built on a Mauser-style bolt-action system, the Model 722 boasts a solid and smooth action that helped establish Remington’s reputation for dependable centerfire rifles. This robust design, paired with the high-performance 6mm cartridge, created a platform capable of excellent accuracy at extended distances. Notably, while the .244 Remington name was later phased out in favor of the 6mm Remington—a change aimed at appealing to a broader range of shooters and hunters—the cartridges are dimensionally identical and interchangeable. The only distinction lies in the twist rate of the barrels from early rifles, which initially favored lighter bullets. Later models and custom rebarrels often adopted faster twist rates to accommodate heavier, more versatile bullets. Today, the Remington 722 in .244/6mm Remington remains a favorite among collectors and marksmen who value its historical importance, smooth action, and enduring accuracy in a classic American rifle.
