Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Automatic 5, commonly called the Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by the legendary American firearms inventor John Moses Browning in 1898. It holds the distinction of being the first successful semi-automatic shotgun ever produced. Browning's innovative design used long recoil operation, where both the barrel and bolt recoil together before separating, ejecting the spent shell, and chambering a new one. This mechanism allowed for faster follow-up shots compared to pump-action shotguns of the era. The Auto-5 was primarily manufactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) in Belgium, with production beginning in 1902 and continuing in various forms until 1998, making it one of the longest-produced semi-automatic shotguns in history. The shotgun is named for its five-shot capacity—four rounds in the tubular magazine and one in the chamber. One of its distinguishing features is the magazine cutoff switch, which allows the user to eject a chambered round without feeding another from the magazine, useful for switching loads quickly.

American manufacturers Remington Arms and Savage Arms produced nearly identical variants under license. Remington released its version as the Remington Model 11, the first auto-loading shotgun made in the U.S., while Savage marketed theirs as the Savage Model 720. However, these versions typically omitted the magazine cutoff feature found in the original Browning models. Despite this, all shared the core mechanics of Browning’s groundbreaking design and contributed significantly to the popularity and evolution of semi-automatic shotguns throughout the 20th century.
