The Browning Automatic 5, commonly called the Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by the legendary American firearms inventor John Moses Browning in 1898. It holds the distinction of being the first successful semi-automatic shotgun ever produced. Browning's innovative design used long recoil operation, where both the barrel and bolt recoil together before separating, ejecting the spent shell, and chambering a new one. This mechanism allowed for faster follow-up shots compared to pump-action shotguns of the era. The Auto-5 was primarily manufactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) in Belgium, with production beginning in 1902 and continuing in various forms until 1998, making it one of the longest-produced semi-automatic shotguns in history.
