Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
According to THE WHITNEY PISTOL book, "Production of the .22 Whitney Pistol began in January of 1956. The earliest pistols were rollmarked, WHITNEY WOLVERINE. The design came from the firearms designer Robert L. (Bob) Hillberg. Most pistols produced in the 1950s were a replica or at least bore a resemblance to an existing model. Not so in the case of the Whitney Wolverine. Its futuristic was a copy of no existing model. One outdoor magazine announcement publicized it as the Lightning while another called it Tomorrows Pistol Today.
Robert Lee Hillberg passed away on August 12, 2012, just short of his 96th birthday. Bob held more than forty patents in firearms design. Bob remarked after editing an article about his life and times, My God, I must have Hoppes Number Nine flowing through my veins! When asked what designs he was most proud of, he would answer without hesitation, the Whitney pistol. One can only wonder what what the future may have held for Bob Hillberg and the Whitney Firearms Company if it were not for the marketing contract with Galef. No doubt, Robert L. Hillberg will go down in history as one of the 20th Century's greatest firearms designers."
