Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 70 Target (pre-64) is a highly respected and increasingly rare variant of what is often referred to as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” Produced between 1936 and 1963, these pre-64 models are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, smooth controlled-round-feed action, and hand-fitted steel components. The Target model was specifically designed for precision shooting and competition use, featuring a heavy-contour barrel (typically 24 to 26 inches), a Marksman-style walnut stock, and iron sight configurations geared toward bullseye or match shooting. These rifles often came equipped with a Redfield aperture rear sight and a hooded front post, though many were later outfitted with optics via factory-tapped scope mounts. One of the standout features of the pre-64 Target model is its exceptional build quality, which included machined steel bottom metal, a forged receiver, and a crisp, adjustable trigger. The heavier profile and stock geometry made it ideal for prone or benchrest shooting, offering outstanding stability and accuracy. Calibers ranged widely, with .30-06 Springfield being the most common, though rarer examples were produced in .220 Swift, .300 H&H Magnum, and other high-velocity target rounds. These rifles were built during Winchester’s golden era, before cost-cutting measures in 1964 changed the construction of the Model 70 line. From a historical and collector’s standpoint, the Winchester Model 70 Target pre-64 is a symbol of American precision engineering at its peak. Its limited production numbers compared to standard sporter models, combined with its purpose-built features and association with competitive shooting, make it a standout in the world of bolt-action rifles. For shooters and collectors who appreciate legacy, craftsmanship, and performance, the pre-64 Target model remains one of the most revered rifles Winchester ever produced.
