Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 62A is a refined iteration of Winchester’s long-running slide-action .22 family — a compact, reliable pump rifle designed for informal target shooting, small-game hunting, and general plinking. Developed as the successor to the Model 1890/1906 line and introduced with the Model 62 in the 1930s, the 62A designation denotes the updated late-production mechanism that Winchester adopted as part of a series of incremental engineering improvements. The most important mechanical change that separates the earlier Model 62 from the 62A is the switch from a flat mainspring to a coiled hammer spring and associated minor bolt/trigger-tang revisions; this change (completed around the late 1930s/early 1940s in Winchester’s production run) simplified parts and improved serviceability while preserving the rifle’s smooth, short pump stroke and positive feeding from the tubular magazine. The rifle is a take-down design with a roughly 23? tapered round barrel, side ejection, and a simple, robust action that cycles .22 Short/Long/Long Rifle (and, in some runs, .22 W.R.F.) with the familiar Winchester reliability that made the model a staple in American gun cabinets. In use, the Model 62A earned a reputation as a practical, user-friendly rimfire that balances durability, ease of maintenance, and adequate accuracy for its intended roles. Its take-down capability, comfortable forend and stock geometry, and the long sight radius (on the standard 23? barrel) make it quick to shoulder and steady for small-game work and casual target practice. Collectors and shooters distinguish pre-war Model 62s from the later 62A examples: pre-war rifles are often more sought after for their earlier finish and original fittings, while the 62A’s production numbers and post-war variations make examples easier to find and generally less expensive — though condition, matching parts, bore quality, and correct sights still drive value. Practical considerations for owners include checking forearm fit and action smoothness, verifying the tang/trigger-spring configuration (a quick way to tell 62 vs. 62A), and inspecting the bore and magazine tube for corrosion on older guns; when reasonably clean and correctly timed, a 62A remains a delightful, hard-working little rifle that exemplifies Winchester’s mid-20th-century rimfire engineering.
