Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this classic bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Remington Model 722!

The Remington Model 722, introduced in 1948 as the short-action companion to the Model 721, was a streamlined, economical bolt-action sporting rifle designed by Merle “Mike” Walker and Homer W. Young; it featured a lathe-turned round receiver and a slick push-feed bolt that delivered excellent accuracy for its time and helped pave the way to Remington’s later Model 700. Remington offered the 722 in a variety of small- to medium-game chamberings (including .222 Remington, .244/.243, .257 Roberts, .300 Savage, and later .308), and beginning in 1958, the company cataloged a .222 Remington Magnum version — a stretched, higher-case-capacity derivative of the .222 Remington aimed at varmint and target shooters. Remington produced roughly 117,000 examples of the 721/722 family before discontinuing the line in 1962; the .222 Remington Magnum 722s are comparatively scarce (about 3,800 made) and are therefore popular with collectors and handloaders who prize the cartridge’s overbore performance.

This particular Remington Model 722 chambered in the rare .222 Remington Magnum was produced in 1958, which was the first year the .222 Remington Magnum was introduced.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 722 was built with production economy in mind: many rifles had plain, straight-grained walnut stocks, a one-piece stamped triggerguard/floorplate, and were drilled and tapped for scope mounts, while deluxe BDL variants (mid-1950s) offered select walnut, checkering, and sling swivels.

Mechanically, the 722 used a stout receiver and a simple steel recoil-lug washer between the barrel and receiver shoulder — features introduced to keep accuracy high while lowering manufacturing cost — and it retained the short four-round internal box magazine typical of sporters of the era. Remington produced roughly 117,000 examples of the 721/722 family before discontinuing the line in 1962; the .222 Remington Magnum 722s are comparatively scarce (about 3,800 made) and are therefore popular with collectors and handloaders who prize the cartridge’s overbore performance.
