Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this unique double-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Smith & Wesson Model 15!

The Smith & Wesson Model 15, originally introduced in 1949 as the K-38 Combat Masterpiece, is a six-shot, double-action revolver with adjustable open sights, built on the medium-size "K" frame. In 1957, it was rebranded as the Model 15 when Smith & Wesson switched to numerical designations for its revolvers. The Model 15 remained in production for five decades, until its discontinuation in 1999, with only limited runs in the Heritage Series afterward. This particular example lacks a model number stamp on the yoke but aligns with the Pre-Model 15 and Model 15 based on its serial number and production dates as referenced in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (4th Edition).

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 15, originally introduced as the K-38 Combat Masterpiece in 1949, is a distinguished six-shot, double-action revolver built on the medium-sized "K" frame, chambered in the versatile .38 Special cartridge. Known for its balance between target precision and practical defense, the Model 15 features adjustable open sights and a 4-inch barrel, though various barrel lengths have been offered during its production run. Essentially a shorter-barrel version of the Smith & Wesson Model 14 (K-38 Target Masterpiece), the Model 15 also shares many features with the Model 10 but incorporates target-oriented refinements such as an adjustable rear sight and a Baughman Quick Draw front sight. The Model 15 was initially developed in response to the U.S. military and law enforcement's desire for a more compact version of the K-38 Target Masterpiece, which had been praised for its accuracy. The K-38 Combat Masterpiece, distinguished by its 4-inch barrel and quick-draw front sight, quickly found favor with police departments, including the FBI, who sought a reliable, accurate revolver for both service and duty use. In 1957, Smith & Wesson standardized its naming system, renaming the K-38 Combat Masterpiece the Model 15, aligning it with their other revolver models, such as the Model 10 (Military & Police) and Model 14 (Target Masterpiece). Production of the Model 15 continued until 1999, with limited runs in the Heritage Series thereafter. Over its extensive production, the Model 15 saw several refinements, indicated by dash numbers (15-1, 15-2, 15-3), but it remained a solid, dependable firearm throughout its lifetime. The Model 15’s combination of target-grade accuracy, practical design, and historical significance solidified its place as one of Smith & Wesson’s most respected revolvers, especially favored for law enforcement use and target shooting.
