Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Blackhawk is a renowned six-shot, single-action revolver produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co., first introduced in 1955. Its design was inspired by the popularity of Westerns in the 1950s and the lack of available single-action revolvers following Colt's discontinuation of the Single Action Army before World War II. Ruger's first foray into the centerfire revolver market, the Blackhawk was initially chambered in .357 Magnum, quickly gaining popularity for its simplicity and strength. In 1956, responding to the success of Smith & Wesson's .44 Magnum, Ruger developed a .44 Magnum version, making it more affordable and readily available than its competition, the S&W Model 29. A popular legend suggests that Ruger’s quick response to the new .44 Magnum cartridge came after a company employee found spent cartridge cases at a scrapyard, tipping off the company to S&W's upcoming release. Between 1955 and 1962, the "Flattop" models were produced, notable for their lack of "ear" protection around the adjustable rear sight, which became a standard feature in later models. From 1962 to 1972, Ruger produced the "Three Screw" Blackhawk, named for the three visible screws on the side of the revolver. These models featured adjustable sights and coil springs for greater durability, replacing the Colt's flat leaf springs. Unlike the Colt, the Blackhawk's hammer was manually half-cocked to load and unload the firearm, though this design carried the risk of accidental discharge when fully loaded with six rounds.
