Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the aftermath of the Second World War, Germany lay in ruins, its cities shattered and its once-mighty Wehrmacht disbanded. Among the weapons that had earned distinction during the conflict was the Walther P38, a 9x19mm service pistol widely regarded as one of the finest military handguns of its era thanks to its innovative double-action/single-action system, rugged design, and excellent handling. Although Walther’s original factory at Zella-Mehlis fell into the Soviet zone of occupation, production of the P38 continued in France at Manurhin, using tooling seized as reparations. Meanwhile, company owner Fritz Walther reestablished the firm in Ulm in 1949, just as the new West German state was being organized. When the Bundeswehr was raised in 1955, it sought a proven service sidearm and selected the P38, with deliveries of newly made pistols beginning in mid-1957.
