Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ernst Thälmann Makarov PM, manufactured under license at the VEB Ernst Thälmann Waffenfabrik in Suhl, East Germany, was produced from 1958 to about 1965 and is widely regarded as one of the finest Makarov variants ever made. Early production used die-cast components but quickly shifted to fully machined parts, addressing initial structural issues. Distinguished by its high-quality deep blue finish, chrome-lined barrel, and one-piece black plastic grips, the Suhl Makarov also features a unique slide serration pattern—10 cuts on the left side and 17 on the right—setting it apart from Soviet and Bulgarian models. It adheres to the classic PM design: a blowback-operated, all-steel pistol with fixed barrel, double-action/single-action trigger, slide-mounted safety-decocker, heel-magazine release, and fixed sights.

Issued to East German military and security forces until German reunification in 1990, these pistols were later imported into the U.S. as surplus and are now highly prized by collectors for their rarity, craftsmanship, and Cold War heritage. Their mechanical simplicity, robust construction, and refined aesthetics make the Ernst Thälmann PM a standout among Cold War-era sidearms.
