The Remington Model 11-48 is a semi-automatic shotgun that was created by Remington Arms as the first of its "new generation" semi-automatics after World War II. It was produced from 1949 to 1968 as a replacement for the Remington Model 11. The shotgun was made in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge, as well as .410 variations. The Model 11-48 is a semi-automatic shotgun that operates through long-recoil and is based on John Browning's 1898 design. The shotgun features a tubular magazine located under the barrel for storing shells. When a shell is fired, the barrel and bolt recoil together, moving a distance greater than the shell length. This action re-cocks the hammer, ejects the spent shell, and feeds another shell from the magazine into the action.
