Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mauser Model 1898 is widely recognized as a pivotal design in the evolution of modern two-lug, turn-bolt rifles, serving as a benchmark against which many other rifles are measured. Patented by Paul Mauser in 1895 and officially adopted by the German armed forces on April 5, 1898, the Model 1898 has earned a reputation for its reliability in combat. Its robust and nearly indestructible design has also made it a favorite among sportsmen, big-game hunters, and professional guides. This rifle has been produced in various countries, leading to differences in quality and materials. Despite these variations, high-quality versions of the Model 1898, such as Browning’s FN High-Power rifle, are highly sought after and command premium prices.

The FN High-Power, a distinguished iteration of the Mauser 1898, was offered in three grades: Safari, Medallion, and Olympian. Despite being the base rifle, the Safari model was noted for its aesthetic appeal, featuring select walnut wood, hand-cut checkering, and a hand-fitted stock. This base model also included a steel recoil lug and a stock that was carefully bedded to the barreled action to enhance accuracy. Additionally, the trigger guard and floorplate were subtly engraved and highlighted with gold, while the stock was finished with a high-quality gloss or semi-gloss coating that was popular then. The rust bluing on these rifles was particularly well-executed, deep in color, and durable.
The High-Power rifles were available in a range of popular calibers, from .243 Winchester to .458 Winchester Magnum, although the majority were chambered for .30-06-length (3.340 inches) and .375 H&H-length (3.600 inches) cartridges. Short-action cartridges, such as .243 and .308 Winchester, were produced in limited quantities on the ’98 action. Browning chose to offer Sako Finnish-built rifles for these and additional calibers like .222 Remington, .222 Remington Magnum, and .22-250 Remington. Known for their exceptional accuracy, Sako rifles feature a distinctive push-feed system with a robust rotating extractor that engages over the rim when closing and a blade-style ejector that allows precise control of cases as they are extracted from the chamber. The Sako rifles' precise action and barrel specifications ensure smooth, flawless function and high accuracy, complementing the Mauser Model 1898’s storied legacy in rifle design.
