Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Official Police, introduced in 1927 as a rebranded version of the earlier Army Special, was designed to directly target the growing demand for reliable service revolvers among law enforcement agencies. Its adoption by major police departments such as New York City and Boston, along with federal agencies like the FBI and the Treasury Department, solidified its reputation as a standard-issue sidearm. Beyond law enforcement, the revolver also saw widespread use with private guard services, industrial plant security, and civilian shooters who valued its strength, reliability, and versatility. Colt enhanced its appeal by offering the Official Police in multiple finishes, including blue and bright nickel, and in a variety of barrel lengths ranging from compact 2-inch models to the longer 6-inch versions. Its chamberings reflected both domestic and international demand, with options spanning .22LR, .32-20, .38-200 British (.38 S&W), .38 Special, and .41 Long Colt.

The revolver’s ergonomics and durability further boosted its popularity. Colt offered grip options including square and rounded butts, with heavy-barrel versions generally built in the 6-inch configuration. Early production models were fitted with checkered walnut grips adorned with silver Colt medallions, later replaced in 1947 by “Coltwood” plastic grips before a return to walnut in 1954. The example described here features a blued finish, a 4-inch barrel, serrated blade front sight with square-notch rear, and classic checkered walnut grips with Colt medallions. As a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, this configuration reflects one of the most common and enduring service models of its era. Produced from 1927 through 1969, the Colt Official Police stands as one of the most influential American revolvers of the 20th century, bridging the needs of professional law enforcement with those of private citizens.
