Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 39A, introduced in 1939, is one of the longest-running rimfire lever-action rifles ever produced, with roots that reach back to the Marlin Model 1891—the first successful lever-action .22 rimfire rifle. Early 39A rifles carried forward Marlin’s traditional forged-steel construction, American walnut stocks, and the well-known takedown system that allowed the rifle to be separated with a single screw for easy maintenance. Chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges and fed from a tubular magazine, the 39A quickly earned a reputation for smooth operation, accuracy, and durability, undergoing only minor changes throughout its early production years. In the early 1950s, Marlin refined the model with upgraded finishes and detail improvements, leading to the adoption of the Golden 39A designation. Beginning in 1953, the Golden 39A incorporated Marlin’s Micro-Groove rifling, which improved accuracy and reduced barrel wear compared to traditional cut rifling.

The Golden 39A retained the same reliable action, takedown design, and cartridge versatility of the original 39A, while adding the cosmetic enhancements and quality refinements that distinguished the “Golden” series. Across its long manufacturing history, the 39A and Golden 39A remained remarkably consistent in design, contributing to their reputation for craftsmanship, reliability, and classic handling. These qualities have made the 39A line one of the most respected and collectible rimfire lever rifles in American firearms history.
