Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Trooper was introduced in 1953 during a period when Colt was modernizing its revolver line to meet new demands from both civilian shooters and law enforcement. Designed to be a more affordable alternative to the high-end Colt 357 and, later, the Python, the Trooper featured adjustable sights and was chambered initially in .38 Special, with a .22 LR version offered as a training counterpart. Built on Colt’s trusted “E” frame, the revolver shared mechanical roots with the Officer’s Model Match but featured a more rugged ramped front sight and other enhancements for duty use. By 1961, Colt streamlined its offerings by discontinuing the 357 model and reconfiguring the Trooper to handle .357 Magnum, shifting it onto the improved “I” frame—the same internal design used by the Python, distinguished by a frame-mounted firing pin. The .22 LR variant, however, remained on the older “E” frame until its eventual phase-out.

The Trooper’s production run saw a number of cosmetic and functional updates. Early models were available in Colt’s distinctive Duo-Tone blued finish, with polished flats and matte accents, and later transitioned to a full high-polish blue or optional bright nickel. Barrel options included 4-inch and 6-inch lengths for the .38 and .357, while the .22 LR was produced only with a 4-inch barrel. Grips evolved from fully checkered American walnut target stocks to second-generation grips in the early 1960s, which featured semi-circle checkering, medallions, and a loading clearance cut. All Troopers wore Silver Colt medallions, with Gold reserved exclusively for the Python line. Colt also offered combinations of Target or Service hammers and grips, and continued to refine the Accro rear sight, which began with a rounded profile and later transitioned to a squared-off and elevated design for better adjustability. By 1969, Colt discontinued the Trooper along with most of its “E” and “I” frame revolvers—except the Python—marking the end of an era for one of Colt’s most versatile and serviceable double-action revolvers.
