Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Pony Express was an American express mail service that used relays of horse-mounted riders. It operated from April 3, 1860, to October 26, 1861, between Missouri and California. It was operated by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company. During its 18 months of operation, the Pony Express reduced the time for messages to travel between the east and west US coasts to about 10 days. It became the West's most direct means of east-west communication before the first transcontinental telegraph was established (October 24, 1861) and was vital for tying the new U.S. state of California with the rest of the United States.

Despite a heavy subsidy, the Pony Express was not a financial success and went bankrupt in 18 months, when a faster telegraph service was established. Nevertheless, it demonstrated that a unified transcontinental system of communications could be established and operated year-round. When replaced by the telegraph, the Pony Express quickly became romanticized and became part of the lore of the American West. Its reliance on the ability and endurance of hardy riders and fast horses was seen as evidence of the rugged American individualism of the frontier times.

The Colt Single Action Army (also known as the SAA, Model P, Peacemaker, or M1873) is a single-action revolver handgun. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1872 by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company (today known as Colt's Manufacturing Company). It was adopted as the standard-issued pistol of the U.S. Army from 1873 until 1892. The Colt SAA has been offered in over 30 different calibers and various barrel lengths. Its overall appearance has remained consistent since 1873. Colt has canceled its production twice but brought it back due to popular demand. The revolver was dubbed the "Peacemaker", and is a famous piece of Americana and the American Wild West era, due to its popularity with ranchers, lawmen, and outlaws alike. Today, they are mainly bought as memorabilia by collectors and re-enactors. Its design has influenced the production of numerous other models from other companies.

In 1966, Colt made a Pony Express .45 SAA 4-Square Set with serial ranges and backstrap markings of PE001E-PE250E "SACRAMENTO TO FRIDAY'S STATION," PE251E-PE500E "SALT LAKE CITY TO FORT LARAMIE," PE001W-PE250W "ST. JOSEPH TO MARYSVILLE,"' and PE251W-PE500W "FORT KEARNEY TO JULESBURG." The Russell, Majors & Waddell Pony Express Colt commemoratives are a tribute to the famed "Pony Express" American express mail service that used relays of horse-mounted riders. These revolvers were tastefully engraved with "Russell, Majors & Waddell Pony Express Presentation Model" on the left side of the barrel, "Colt .45 Peacemaker" on the right side of the barrel, the backstraps and cylinders are marked with Pony Express Stations and the route starting in St. Joseph, Missouri and ending in Sacramento, California.
