Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Originally designed as a close-range carbine for deer hunting in dense woodland, the Ruger Model 44 Carbine was introduced in 1961 under the name "Deerstalker." This moniker lasted only until 1962, when a lawsuit filed by Ithaca Gun Company forced Ruger to abandon it. The Model 44's design would go on to influence the creation of the immensely popular Ruger 10/22, chambered in .22 LR, which made its debut in 1964. Unfortunately, due to high production costs, the Model 44 was discontinued in 1985, and Ruger no longer offers parts support for the rifle. The Model 44 was eventually replaced by the Ruger Deerfield Carbine, which was introduced in 2000 and produced until 2006. However, the Deerfield was an entirely new design and bore little resemblance to the Model 44.

While the Model 44 featured a solid-topped receiver, the Deerfield Carbine adopted an open-top design, similar to the M1 Carbine, which provided enhanced strength while also reducing production costs. Additionally, the Deerfield used a rotary magazine, much like the one found in Ruger's renowned .22 LR 10/22 rifle, further emphasizing Ruger's shift towards more cost-effective and efficient manufacturing techniques.
