Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 48 was first produced in 1959 and was chambered in .22 WMR, a rimfire cartridge that had been introduced by Winchester earlier that year. The gun's performance quickly gained popularity among enthusiasts and continues to be a favorite to this day. However, the Model 48 faced a tough challenge in 1986, when semi-automatic pistols began to dominate the handgun market. Due to low consumer demand, production of the Model 48 was stopped.
After receiving many requests to bring back the gun, Smith & Wesson reversed its decision and introduced a new model called the 648, made of stainless steel. A second version (648-2) was later released in 2003, but it received criticism for its internal lock. However, neither of these models was able to recreate the original. Recognizing the popularity of the timeless look, Smith & Wesson now offers the 48s in its Classic line. These revolvers are chambered for .22 WMR and feature external hammers and both single and double-action firing modes. While they retain all the best features of the original, modern manufacturing has allowed for some improvements to be made.
