Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this awesome bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Rifle Factory Ishapore (R.F.I.) 2A1 (Converted to No.7 Jungle Carbine)!

After retiring from military service, the 2A1 found a new life in the civilian market through conversions into “Jungle Carbine” style rifles, known as the No. 7 Jungle Carbines. Companies such as Gibbs Rifle Company and Navy Arms in the United States shortened the barrel, modified the stock, and added flash hiders to mimic the appearance of the British No. 5 Jungle Carbine. These adaptations appealed to collectors and enthusiasts seeking a compact, historically inspired rifle. The original Jungle Carbine concept began with the Lee-Enfield No. 5 Mk I during World War II, developed for jungle warfare where mobility and maneuverability were essential. Post-war civilian conversions and modern replicas have continued this tradition, sometimes blurring the line between authentic military rifles and civilian adaptations. The Ishapore 2A1 rifles converted into the No. 7 Jungle Carbine represent this blend of historical military heritage and modern civilian utility, making it a highly prized rifle for collectors and shooting enthusiasts alike.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ishapore 2A1 is a bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, developed by Rifle Factory Ishapore in India during the early 1960s. Designed as a modernized successor to the British Lee-Enfield SMLE Mk III*, it was built to withstand the higher pressures of the NATO cartridge while preserving the iconic Lee-Enfield profile. Externally, the 2A1 closely resembles its predecessor, but it incorporates key upgrades, including a squared-off magazine capable of holding 10 to 12 rounds, a redesigned extractor for the rimless NATO cartridge, and reinforced steel construction for greater durability. Officially adopted by the Indian Army in 1963, the rifle remained in service until 1974, with approximately 250,000 units produced.
