Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Cobra First Issue, produced from 1950 to 1972, is a seminal revolver in Colt’s lineup, representing a significant leap in firearm technology and design. Chambered in .38 Special, this model features a 2-inch barrel, making it a compact and easily concealable firearm suited for both self-defense and general use. The blue finish provides a classic look while maintaining durability. The revolver is equipped with serrated ramp front sights and a square-notch rear sight, offering precise aiming capabilities. The checkered walnut grips, adorned with silver Colt medallions on the short grip frame, not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also ensure a secure hold. The introduction of the Cobra marked Colt’s innovative use of "Coltalloy," an aluminum alloy, in its frame, side plate, and cylinder crane, while retaining steel for the barrel and other critical components. This approach significantly reduced the revolver’s weight without compromising its strength, a key feature that distinguished it from contemporaries. The First Issue Cobra, as the initial version of this model, featured a square butt, which was later updated to a round butt in subsequent versions. Notably, in 1966, Colt streamlined production by transitioning from the long grip frame to the short grip frame, similar to the Colt Agent. This change resulted in grips that overlapped the bottom of the frame, offering a more comfortable and full-sized grip despite the revolver’s compact design.

Throughout its production, the Cobra was available in various barrel lengths—2, 3, and 4 inches—though there were a few rare 5-inch square butt models made for the Venezuelan government. The revolver was offered in different finishes, including bright-blued steel and blue-black anodized aluminum or full bright nickel. Despite the revolver's evolution over time, including changes to the grips from "Coltwood" plastic to checkered walnut and various medallion styles, the First Issue Cobra remains a classic representation of Colt’s innovative spirit and commitment to quality. The model was available with a Colt hammer shroud upon special order, further showcasing its adaptability and Colt’s dedication to meeting diverse customer needs.
