Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this historic bolt-action rifle for a penny-start auction today; this is the Rifle Factory Ishapore (R.F.I.) 2A1 No. 7 "Jungle Carbine"!
The Jungle Carbine concept originated with the Lee-Enfield No. 5 Mk I during World War II, designed for use in jungle environments where mobility and compactness were paramount. Post-war civilian conversions and replicas have since perpetuated the Jungle Carbine designation, sometimes leading to confusion between original military rifles and civilian adaptations. The Ishapore 2A1 repurposed into the No. 7 Jungle Carbine, represents a blend of historical military heritage with contemporary civilian utility, appealing to enthusiasts and collectors alike for its unique lineage and functional adaptability.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Externally, the Ishapore 2A/2A1 closely resembles the SMLE Mk III*, featuring a distinctive square magazine with capacities of either 10 or 12 rounds and utilizing a buttplate derived from the Indian FN FAL variant, the 1A rifle. Constructed with a bolt and receiver made from nickel steel, the 2A/2A1 incorporated modifications to accommodate the 7.62mm NATO round, including improved steel capable of withstanding higher pressures and a redesigned extractor for rimless cartridges.
The transition from the 2A to the 2A1 variant in 1965 introduced a more practical rear sight with graduations up to 800 meters, better suited to modern combat scenarios. Despite its military retirement, the 2A1 rifles found new life in the civilian market through conversions to No. 7 Jungle Carbines by companies like Navy Arms in the United States. These conversions capitalized on the rifle's robust platform and historical lineage, adapting it into a lighter, more maneuverable form suitable for hunting and recreational shooting.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Rifle 7.62mm 2A/2A1, or Ishapore 2A/2A1, originally developed as a bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO, emerged as a versatile adaptation of the classic Lee-Enfield rifle series. Introduced in 1963 by the Rifle Factory Ishapore of the Ordnance Factories Board in India, the 2A/2A1 replaced the earlier .303 British caliber SMLE Mk III* in Indian military service. While it ceased active duty with the military, it found a secondary role within Indian police forces due to its reliability and robust construction.
