Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 660 is a bolt-action rifle that was manufactured by Remington Arms from 1968 to 1971. It was designed as a replacement for the earlier Model 600, which had been produced between 1964 and 1967. The Model 660 was introduced in response to the success of the Model 600, but with several key refinements intended to address certain design features and improve overall performance. One of the main changes in the Model 660 was the elimination of the ventilated rib that was found on the Model 600. The ventilated rib, which had been a signature feature of the earlier model, was removed to simplify the rifle's design and reduce production costs. Another notable modification was a 1.5-inch increase in the barrel length, which not only improved the rifle's accuracy but also enhanced its velocity and performance, particularly with the .308 Winchester and .243 Winchester calibers, which were two of the most popular chamberings for the rifle. The Model 660 was available in several calibers, including .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .350 Remington Magnum, and 6mm Remington, which made it a versatile option for a wide range of hunting applications, from small game to larger big-game species. The rifle was designed with a compact, lightweight stock, which made it especially appealing to hunters who preferred a more maneuverable rifle in the field. Its relatively short length and light weight also made it easier to handle in dense brush and tough hunting conditions.

Despite the improved features, the Model 660 did not achieve the same level of popularity as the Model 600, and after just three years of production, it was discontinued in 1971. In its place, Remington introduced the Model 600 Mohawk, which was a further evolution of the design, incorporating both aesthetic and functional improvements. Although the Model 660 was relatively short-lived, it remains a collector’s item for firearm enthusiasts and vintage rifle collectors, largely due to its unique place in Remington's bolt-action rifle history and its refined design elements.
