Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 1100, introduced in 1963, revolutionized the shotgun market by combining semi-automatic operation with gas-driven reliability, setting a new standard for smooth shooting and reduced recoil. Unlike traditional recoil-operated semi-autos, the 1100 utilizes a gas-operated system, where gases are bled off through ports in the barrel near the fore-end to cycle the action. These gases drive a steel action sleeve, which encircles the magazine tube and connects to the bolt carrier, ensuring smooth operation. Upon firing, the system ejects the spent shell, releases a fresh round from the magazine, and then cycles the bolt forward under the pressure of an action spring housed in the stock, loading the next shell effortlessly. This innovative gas system made the Model 1100 one of the softest-recoiling shotguns of its time, quickly earning favor among sporting, skeet, and trap shooters who valued its fast cycling, reliability, and smooth handling.
