Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in July 1964, the Smith & Wesson 58, also known as the .41 Magnum Military & Police, is a double-action revolver built on the square butt N-frame with three screws. It features a 6-shot fluted and counterbored cylinder with a nominal length of 1.75 inches, available in blue or nickel finishes. The revolver boasts a 4-inch pinned barrel, walnut PC-style grips adorned with S&W medallions and a diamond around the screw escutcheon. Its service hammer and serrated trigger each measure .265 inches. The top strap has a flat matte finish, while the backstrap and front strap are smooth. The front sight is a 1/8-inch serrated ramp paired with a square notch rear sight. Unlike the Model 57, the 58 has a non-shrouded extractor rod. The original introduction serial number ranges from S256500 to S260632, and many of these revolvers were shipped to police departments in San Francisco, Texas, and New York. In 1969 the serial prefix "S" was changed to the letter "N". Weighing 4 lbs, the total production is approximately 20,287 units from 1964 to 1977. In 2009, the Model 58 was reintroduced as part of the S&W Classic Series, featuring a 4-inch barrel in both blue and nickel finishes, along with an internal lock, produced from 2009 to 2012.
