Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage 1895/1899/99 model rifles boast a rich history, setting themselves apart from many contemporaneous lever actions with their innovative hammerless design. This hammerless mechanism not only reduces lock time, enhancing accuracy, but also minimizes the risk of jamming in dense brush or snagging on clothing. The 1895 model features a cocking indicator visible through a hole at the top of the bolt. Both the 1895 and the 1899/99 models are equipped with a distinctive rotary magazine that utilizes a spring-loaded spool with grooves and a counter to indicate the number of rounds loaded. This design allowed the use of spitzer bullets, which were incompatible with the tubular magazines of Winchester rifles of the era due to the risk of accidental discharge from pointed tips. Consequently, Savage rifles were well-suited for high-velocity smokeless powder cartridges, offering flatter trajectories and a performance edge over other lever-action designs. Among these, the 75th Anniversary rifle, chambered in .308 Winchester and featuring an octagonal barrel, stands out. Produced in a limited run of 10,000 units in 1970, it celebrated 75 years of Savage’s pioneering lever-action legacy.

According to a letter sent with the gun, "This Savage Model 1895 was purchased in early 2021. At the time, it was part of a sale by the Chuck Taylor estate in Prescott, Arizona. Even though it was unable to authenticate or attest to the actual ownership of this rifle by the late Chuck Taylor, who passed in 2020. There are certain characteristics about this rifle that make it unique and part of the mystic of Mr. Taylor. For one thing, we know he was an avid hunter and was known for his personalization/customization of his firearms. This was evident as many of the items in the estate sale were customized for use in the field. For example, there was a Smith and Wesson Model 29 with an olive-green coating of cerakote as well as other firearms with a uniqueness that would be personal for use out in the field. This Savage rifle was no different, whoever the "previous owner", they had cerakoted the bright brass lever and buttplate to hide the shine for use in the field. This customization follows many of the other items in the estate sale."
