Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The "2nd Generation" Model 1851 Navy revolver was produced between 1971 through 1978, also referred to as the "C"-series. Subcontractors supplied some forgings or small parts, and all of the completed pistols were produced to Colt's strict specifications and quality control with the final inspection performed by Colt, with the result that despite some work being performed outside the Colt factory, collectors tend to regard these revolvers as original Colts rather than reproductions. This Colt 1851 Navy 2nd Generation “Robert E. Lee Commemorative” was designed as a heavier, more robust version of the earlier Colt Pocket revolver. It features a six-shot cylinder and a 7.5-inch octagonal barrel and comes with a blue finished barrel/cylinder, a case-colored frame, a silver-plated brass grip frame. The grip is a one-piece walnut grip, and the barrel comes stamped “Robert E. Lee Commemorative Nineteen Seventy-One” on the left side. The cylinder is also engraved with a naval battle scene from the Mexican-American war.
