The Colt Junior was a compact pocket pistol introduced in 1957, with production beginning in 1958. Inspired by earlier Colt designs, it was marketed as a small, easily concealable firearm chambered in .25 ACP. Over 40,000 units were produced until 1968, when the Gun Control Act restricted the importation of non-sporting firearms, effectively halting production. To navigate the new regulations, Colt partnered with Firearms Import & Export (FIE) in Florida, which imported Spanish-made parts for domestic assembly. Production resumed briefly from 1970 to 1972, with Spanish-produced guns identifiable by a "CC" serial number suffix and U.S.-assembled models marked with an "OD" prefix. Ultimately, Colt discontinued the Junior in 1973.

During the early 20th century, Colt found great success in the pocket pistol market with the John Browning-designed Model 1908 Vest Pocket Hammerless, selling over 400,000 units between 1908 and 1941. After World War II, Colt attempted to re-enter the market by briefly resuming production of the Model 1908 using leftover parts, but the economic landscape had changed. Inexpensive European imports flooded the market, making domestically manufactured small pistols less competitive. Although Colt developed a new pocket pistol design, it proved too costly to produce. To remain viable, Colt turned to the Spanish firearms company Astra Unceta y Cía to manufacture a new, more affordable design, which would become the Colt Junior—a small, .25 ACP hammer-fired blowback pistol. The Junior retained a sleek aesthetic reminiscent of earlier Colt designs but omitted the grip safety, instead featuring a manual thumb safety and a bottom-mounted magazine release. It was also available in .22 Short, both versions being compact and lightweight, making them suitable for discreet carry.

This development disrupted Colt’s supply chain and created a gap in the market that Smith & Wesson attempted to fill with their Model 61 Escort. Colt, unwilling to fully abandon the pocket pistol segment, partnered with Firearms Import & Export (FIE) in Florida to import Spanish-made parts for domestic assembly. Production resumed from 1970 to 1972, with Spanish-made Juniors marked by a "CC" serial suffix and U.S.-assembled models using an "OD" prefix. Despite this workaround, Colt discontinued the Junior in 1973, recognizing the declining profitability of the design. However, FIE continued producing the pistol under the name "The Best" into the 1980s, extending the legacy of this compact, utilitarian firearm well beyond Colt’s own involvement.
