Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Automatic Caliber .25, commonly known as the Colt Junior, is a compact semi-automatic pocket pistol chambered in .25 ACP. This small, easily concealable firearm follows Colt’s long tradition of producing vest pocket pistols, originally popularized by the Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket Hammerless, which sold over 400,000 units between 1908 and 1941. After World War II, Colt sought to re-enter the pocket pistol market, but the influx of inexpensive European imports made domestic production of a new design financially unfeasible. Instead, Colt partnered with the Spanish manufacturer Astra Unceta y Cía, resulting in the introduction of the Colt Junior in 1954. The pistol featured a 2.25-inch barrel, fixed sights, and a checkered wood grip with silver Colt medallions, giving it a refined yet practical appearance. Unlike the 1908 Vest Pocket, the Junior lacked a grip safety but retained a manual thumb safety for secure carry.

The Colt Junior operates on a simple blowback action and is hammer-fired, utilizing a six-round single-stack magazine that is released via a push-button magazine catch located at the bottom of the left grip panel. Measuring only 4.4 inches in overall length and weighing 13 ounces unloaded, the Junior was designed for deep concealment and easy pocket carry. However, in 1968, the Gun Control Act prohibited the importation of non-sporting firearms, forcing Colt to halt production. In response, Colt arranged for the Florida-based Firearms Import & Export (FIE) to import Spanish-made parts for assembly in the U.S., allowing production to resume from 1970 to 1972. The Spanish-made Juniors feature a ‘CC’ serial number suffix, while U.S.-assembled versions have ‘OD’ prefixes. By 1973, Colt ceased sales of the Junior, but FIE continued producing and selling a nearly identical version under the name “The Best” into the 1980s. Today, the Colt Junior remains a sought-after collector’s piece, representing an era when pocket pistols were a staple of everyday carry and personal defense.
