Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this special edition semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction, this is the Heckler & Koch HK4 “Harrington & Richardson 100th Anniversary Commemorative”.

Most HK4 pistols were sold to civilians, many in the US. The early U.S. importer of the HK4 was Harrington & Richardson, Inc. (H&R) of Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1971 H&R imported a special edition of the HK4 (second variant) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company (serial numbers HR00001 to HR08700). On this version of the HK4, the nameplate contained the following inscription: Harrington & Richardson Inc. / Worcester, Mass: USA / Made In Germany. To the right of the inscription was the circular H&R logo with 1871 to the left and 1971 to the right. Harrington & Richardson delivered the HK 4 to customers as a standard two-box set in .380 ACP and .22 LR. The first 2000 guns, serial numbers HR00001 to HR02000, came with a gold trigger and name plate in a red velvet-lined wood presentation case with an extra barrel and screwdriver. The HK4 with serial numbers above HR02000 have the standard black nameplate and trigger.

This particular model wears serial #HR00360, which makes it number 360 out of the first 2,000 guns produced!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The HK4 is a highly refined version of the Mauser HSc self-loading pistol. Heckler & Koch's familiarity with the HSc design stems from the fact that many of the company's founders had previously worked at Mauser-Werke Oberndorf A.G. both before and after World War II. Much like the HSc, the HK4 features a straight blowback action, a double-action trigger, and a slide-mounted safety. The name "HK4" refers to the pistol's unique feature: the tool-free interchangeability of its four barrels, which can accommodate different calibers, including 9mm Browning Short, 7.65mm Browning, 6.35mm Browning, and .22 Long Rifle. The pistol consists of four primary components: the slide, barrel and recoil spring assembly, frame, and magazine. To switch between the various centerfire calibers (6.35mm Browning/.25 ACP, 7.65mm Browning/.32 ACP, and 9mm Short/.380 ACP), users need only swap the barrel, recoil spring assembly, and magazine.

When switching from centerfire to the rimfire .22 LR caliber, an additional step is required: loosening a screw on the breech face and rotating the removable breech face to the appropriate position for either centerfire or rimfire ammunition. From today’s point of view, none of the above calibers is particularly effective for self-defense. But the HK4 was somehow commercially successful, perhaps because it was accepted as a service pistol for the German Customs Police (Zoll), though it was never quite able to compete with the Walther PPK, which was reissued by the Walther Company in the 1950s.
