Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt 1851 Navy Revolver, often mistakenly referred to as the "Colt Revolving Belt Pistol of Naval Caliber," is a .36 caliber, six-shot percussion revolver originally designed by Samuel Colt between 1847 and 1850. Known for its distinctive octagonal barrel and elegant design, the 1851 Navy became one of the most iconic revolvers of the 19th century, especially popular during the Civil War. Initially referred to as the "Ranger Size" model or "Revolving Belt," the revolver soon gained the more widely recognized "Navy" designation due to its association with naval officers. The Colt Navy revolver remained in production until 1873, when it was replaced by the famous Colt Single Action Army, also known as the Peacemaker. Throughout its production run, the 1851 Navy proved to be a highly successful model, with approximately 215,000 units produced domestically and an additional 42,000 manufactured at the Colt London Armory. This made the 1851 Navy Colt one of the most widely produced handguns of the era, second only to the Colt Pocket models.
