Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Commander is a single-action, semi-automatic handgun based on the John M. Browning-designed M1911, notable for being the first mass-produced American pistol with an aluminum alloy frame and the first Colt pistol chambered in 9mm Parabellum. Originally developed as Colt's submission for a U.S. government post–World War II trial to find a lighter replacement for the M1911, the Commander was designed to meet new specifications set in 1949, including a maximum weight of 25 ounces and a length not exceeding 7 inches. Colt's entry was a modified M1911, chambered in 9mm, with an aluminum frame, a 4.25-inch barrel, and a 9-round magazine. This model went into regular production in 1950 and was the first aluminum-framed, large-frame pistol to be produced on a major scale. Initially, the Commander was offered in .45 ACP and .38 Super chamberings. In 1970, Colt introduced an all-steel version, the Colt Combat Commander, which was available with an optional satin nickel finish. To differentiate the two models, the aluminum-framed version was renamed the Lightweight Commander. Over the years, Colt produced several variants of the Commander, with different degrees of factory accurizing and materials, further solidifying its place as a versatile and iconic firearm in both military and civilian markets.
