Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Cobra, introduced in 1950, is a distinguished revolver that stands out due to its innovative use of materials and design evolution. Chambered in .38 Special, this model features a 2-inch barrel and a classic blue finish that complements its sleek profile. The Cobra's distinctive serrated ramp front sight and square notched rear sight offer precise aiming capabilities, crucial for accurate shooting. The checkered wood grips enhance handling and provide a traditional aesthetic, reinforcing its status as a reliable sidearm for various shooting applications. What sets the Colt Cobra apart is its use of "Coltalloy," an aluminum alloy developed by Colt, marking a significant shift in firearm construction materials. This lightweight alloy is used for the frame, side plate, and cylinder crane, while the barrel and other critical components remain steel, ensuring durability and strength. This design choice not only reduced the revolver’s weight but also established a precedent for future Colt models, earning it a place in Colt’s renowned "Snake" series of pistols. Produced until 1981, the Cobra was available in multiple barrel lengths—2, 3, and 4 inches—alongside a few rare 5-inch models made for the Venezuelan government. Its finishes varied from bright blued steel with blue-black anodized aluminum to full bright nickel, and during the 1980s Colt strike, it even featured an unpolished dull black finish with smooth wood grips.

The Colt Cobra's design includes a shrouded ejector rod, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetics. Early models of the Cobra had square butts, which were later rounded to match the more compact 2-inch version. Grip options evolved from "Coltwood" plastic with silver medallions to checkered walnut and finally to Combat style grips, reflecting changes in user preferences and manufacturing practices. Special orders could include a Colt hammer shroud, further customizing the revolver to meet specific needs. With its blend of innovation and classic design, the Colt Cobra remains a noteworthy example of Colt's commitment to quality and forward-thinking in firearm design.
