Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1848 Dragoon was based on the much larger 1847 Walker Colt. It had a shortened cylinder, and the overall scale of the gun was reduced to make it easier to handle and carry. The original model was manufactured in a factory owned by Eli Whitney, Jr., and these were known as "Whitneyville" revolvers. Eventually, production was moved to Samuel Colt's factory, and as improvements were made to the revolver's design, the Colt factory produced three different models of the 1848 Dragoon between 1847 and 1860. While many of the modifications were stylistic, other changes greatly improved the gun's performance.
In the late 20th century, a number of companies mainly in Italy began reproducing a number of Colt's 19th century models. Legally these arms could not bear Colt markings and they were required by Italian law to have that country's proof marks. At that time several American entrepreneurs went to Colt and proposed that Colt license a 2nd and 3rd Generation of these discontinued pistols. Colt agreed. Although these pieces bore correct Colt markings and serial numbers there is great controversy as to whether these arms are genuine Colts or not.
This Colt Dragoon 3rd Model "C" Series is the first series of second-generation 3rd Model Dragoons produced. They were assembled and finished between 1974 and 1978 at the Colt Factory with the serial range 20901-25099. There was a total of only 3,899 produced. With all of these points, this gun is sure to catch the eye of collectors!
