Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1960s, Colt became concerned about a decline in its market share due to the high labor costs involved in its manufacturing processes, which led to increased prices. To address this issue, Colt introduced an entirely new product line of revolvers called the MK III series in 1969. The MK IIIs were designed to be the first major advancement of Colt's revolver designs since the beginning of the 20th century. They featured a new 'J' frame and had no parts interchangeability with older models. The new revolvers were groundbreaking because they were the first modern revolver designs to employ a state-of-the-art transfer-bar lock work system. Additionally, the use of sintered parts allowed for improved fabrication tolerances and a special heat treatment that resulted in a harder, more wear-resistant composition. The use of these parts virtually eliminated hand fitting, which significantly lowered labor costs associated with the assembly and manufacture of the MK III line. Colt offered a wide range of versions for the Mark III series, which was made from 1969 to 1983 and intended to replace all old medium frame revolvers except the Python.
This model was the top-of-the-line in the series. It had an adjustable sight and a heavy shrouded barrel. It also featured Target grips, a Target hammer, and Colt's first Target trigger. The barrel was available in three lengths: 4 inches, 6 inches, and later in production, 8 inches. The finishes included a new high gloss bright blue-black, bright nickel, and satin electroless nickel, which is also known as "Coltguard". This satin electroless nickel finish is often mistaken for stainless steel. The calibers offered were .22LR, .22 Magnum, and .357 Magnum, while a few Trooper Mark III's were special ordered by law enforcement in .38 Special.
