Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 552 Speedmaster is a semi-automatic, blow-back operated rifle chambered for .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges. Introduced in 1957, the Speedmaster became a popular choice due to its versatility, capable of using various .22 caliber ammunition with a tubular magazine located under the barrel for easy loading. Designed by engineers L.R. Crittendon and E.W. Hailston, the rifle’s low-profile left-side bolt handle gives the receiver a clean, streamlined appearance, contributing to its slender and ergonomic design. The Speedmaster was manufactured for over three decades, with Remington offering a special 150th-anniversary edition in 1966. The rifle’s durability, smooth action, and adaptability to different ammunition types made it a staple in Remington’s lineup for small game hunters and target shooters.

In the 1990s, the Model 552 Speedmaster underwent several updates, including the introduction of a BDL Deluxe version in 1991, which featured a Monte Carlo comb for better cheek weld when using a scope. Additionally, the checkering on the walnut buttstock and forearm was changed to machine-cut, adding to the rifle’s refined look. However, in 2017, due to user feedback regarding the difficulty of using the rifle with open sights, Remington returned to a straight comb design for current production BDL models. By 2020, the Speedmaster was still being produced as an upgraded BDL model, featuring a glossy finish on the checkered walnut stock and forearm. Throughout its production history, the Remington Model 552 Speedmaster continued to embody a blend of classic design and modern enhancements, making it a beloved rifle among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
