Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Agent revolver was similar to the early Cobra but had a shorter grip frame designed for easy concealment. It was specifically intended to be an undercover weapon that could easily be hidden. The revolver was available in .38 Special and came in a blue or nickel finish. The blued guns had blue-black anodized aluminum frame and cylinder crane, along with blued steel parts. Later, in 1982, the Agent finish was changed to an unpolished flat matte black. The barrel length was 2 inches and the grips were either checkered walnut, which slightly overlapped the bottom of the short grip frame, or smooth wood.
The first version of this gun model was released in 1955 and remained in production until 1972. It featured a thin barrel and exposed ejector rod, similar to the Cobra and Detective Special models of that era. In 1966, Colt made changes to all "D" frames, which included adopting the short grip frame of the Agent model to simplify production. As a result, the Agent became the same gun as the Cobra, except with an Agent barrel stamp and a shorter wood grip.
The second version of this product was manufactured from 1973 to 1991. It featured a heavy, shrouded ejector rod barrel introduced in 1972 on the Detective Special and Cobra but still used short grips. After 1982, this version's finish was matte black. Additionally, some of these Agents were shipped with Colt factory-installed hammer shrouds.
