Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J.P. Sauer Company was established on March 26, 1951, by Rolf Sauer and a group of investors who recognized the value of the Sauer name and reputation. They decided to build a new factory in Eckernfoerde, Schleswig-Holstein, on the Ostsee, between Flensburg and Kiel. The location was chosen because there was an important research and development facility for torpedoes for the German Navy, which had been shut down in 1948, resulting in the loss of jobs for over seven thousand skilled workers. In 1951, the construction of the new factory began amid the rubble, and 200 skilled workers were hired, along with 70 skilled craftsmen from Suhl and the original Sauer factory who escaped the Russian occupation zone.
The goal was to manufacture the most widely used hunting firearms previously made in Suhl. However, there were no technical drawings available for these guns. The team dismantled an original Model VIII shotgun to create production drawings and measured all its components. Eventually, they took apart other models as well. Finally, on December 20th, 1951, they produced the first gun. The new Sauer company had a great advantage as it could start afresh with new and modern technology and machinery. By 1952, the company had 430 employees and an apprenticeship program with 40 apprentices. However, marketing the guns was not easy because the Communist Government made guns in Suhl, which were exported for very low prices, resulting in significant losses. This was because hard currency was badly needed, but the East German currency was not accepted in the free world markets.
It is worth noting some notable activities of the company, such as the production of Mark V Rifles for Weatherby Company in California starting in 1958. The company also established partnership arrangements with Beretta Company in Italy in 1960, AyA in Spain in 1961, and Dynanite-Nobel and Franchi in Italy in 1984. Between 1960 and 1999, the Colt Company in Hartford, Connecticut, produced the model 80 Sauer Drilling, later known as the Colt-Sauer Model 3000 Drilling. This was a basic Anson & Daly type Drilling with a Greener safety, which had already been made in Suhl. The Drilling was available with 16 ga and 12 ga shotgun barrels and six different rifle calibers. It was quite popular among turkey hunters.
This Colt-Sauer 3000 Drilling gun was manufactured in 1976. It has blade front and flip-up notch rear sights on the matted solid rib, along with standard maker and model markings. The rifle has 2 3/4 inch chambers with extractors and light engraving around the breech, as well as modified/full marked chokes. The coin gray receiver is engraved with forested game scenes on either side, showing a running deer on the left and a standing stag on the right. It features cocking indicators, dual triggers (the front is a single set), a tang-mounted selector switch, and a Greener style safety. The rifle has a checkered beavertail forend with engraved fittings, a Deeley latch release, and a pistol grip stock with a ventilated recoil pad.
