Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Woodsman 3rd Series Sport Model!

The Colt Woodsman Third Series Sport Model, produced between 1955 and 1977, offered a lighter, more compact alternative within the final generation of the Woodsman lineup. Designed with a slim profile and a shorter barrel, the Sport Model catered to shooters seeking a versatile .22 LR pistol suited for field use, plinking, and general recreational shooting. It retained the updated ergonomics, modernized controls, and refined styling characteristic of the Third Series while emphasizing handiness and quick handling. Today, the Sport Model is appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts for its balance of classic Colt quality and practical, easy-carrying design.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Woodsman Third Series, produced from 1955 to 1977, represented the final evolution of Colt’s renowned .22 LR semiautomatic pistol line, which had begun in the 1910s under the guidance of John Moses Browning. This series introduced several functional and aesthetic updates that distinguished it from earlier Woodsman generations, including a reshaped grip frame, redesigned safety and magazine release, and a more modernized overall profile. Colt simplified the model lineup during this period, offering the Target, Sport, and Match Target variants, each built around the reputation for accuracy, smooth operation, and fine workmanship that had long defined the Woodsman family. The Third Series continued Colt’s tradition of producing high-quality rimfire pistols appreciated by both target shooters and small-game hunters.

While manufacturing practices increasingly shifted toward cost efficiency in the 1960s and 1970s, the Third Series Woodsman maintained strong performance characteristics and benefited from improvements in durability and parts standardization. The Match Target version, in particular, showcased Colt’s attention to precision with its heavy barrel and enhanced sighting system. Third Series pistols also featured changes intended to meet evolving market expectations, such as redesigned grips and revised markings. Production concluded in 1977, ending more than six decades of Woodsman development. Today, the Third Series is valued by collectors for its balance of modern improvements and classic Colt craftsmanship, serving as a fitting final chapter to one of the most iconic rimfire pistol lines in American firearms history.
