Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the mid-1960s, the absence of a powerful big-bore rifle cartridge in lever-action rifles led Marlin to develop the .444 Marlin, a round designed to fill the gap between the .44 Magnum and the larger .45-70. Created by Remington at Marlin's request in 1964, the .444 Marlin is essentially a lengthened .44 Magnum, with an extra inch of casing that significantly increases powder capacity, resulting in higher velocity and muzzle energy comparable to the .30-06. Marlin adapted their popular Model 336, the standard .30-30 lever-action, to accommodate the new round, resulting in the Model 444, which debuted in 1965. Over the years, several variations of the Model 444 were produced, including the original 24-inch barreled version, the 22-inch barreled Model 444S Sporter introduced in 1971, and the compact 18.5-inch Model 444P Outfitter. In 1994, the introduction of a hammer-blocking safety made the rifle the Model 444SS, a change that upset some traditionalists. The Model 444S, which featured micro-groove rifling and a barrel tapped for scope mounts, was produced from 1972 to 1983 and remains popular among hunters looking for a lever-action rifle capable of delivering substantial stopping power at medium ranges, with some models even offering fluted comb stocks and customizable features. The .444 Marlin’s recoil can be sharp, but it delivers exceptional performance for hunters seeking a versatile and powerful big-bore lever-action rifle.
