This rifle was manufactured in 1976, several years before the significant re-tooling of the M77 in 1991, as evidenced by its original grip tang safety. It maintains a classic Ruger appearance. Importantly, this firearm is commonly referred to as a ‘Liberty’ gun, distinguished by the “200th Year of American Liberty” marking on the barrel—most Ruger firearms produced in 1976 feature this stamp.

The Ruger M77 is a bolt-action rifle developed by Sturm, Ruger & Co., with design leadership from Jim Sullivan during his tenure with the company. Introduced to the U.S. market in 1968, this rifle was primarily designed as a hunting weapon, adopting a Mauser K98-style two-lugged bolt complemented by a claw extractor. Jim Sullivan's innovations, coupled with the influence of Bill Ruger—who hired Sullivan in 1965 specifically for this project—resulted in a rifle that filled a notable gap in the market following the discontinuation of the controlled round feed version of the Winchester Model 70 in 1964. The M77 quickly gained popularity due to several features that appealed to hunters and shooting enthusiasts. Notably, the rifle utilized a Mauser-type claw extractor, which was favored in the industry, and its design incorporated investment casting technology to reduce manufacturing costs.
