Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this incredible bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Ruger M77!

In 1976, to celebrate the United States Bicentennial, Ruger marked nearly all of its firearms with the roll-stamped inscription “Made in the 200th Year of American Liberty.” This special marking appeared on a wide range of models, including the Single-Six, Blackhawk, Mini-14, and others produced that year. While not a limited edition in the traditional sense—since Ruger applied the stamp to all guns manufactured in 1976—the marking has become a popular collector’s detail due to its patriotic significance and the unique place it holds in American firearms history.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1965, Jim Sullivan joined Ruger with the task of developing a bolt-action big game rifle that could rival industry stalwarts like the Winchester Model 70 and Remington Model 700. Sullivan, known for his role in bringing the M16 into production at Armalite, applied his engineering expertise to the project, working closely with Bill Ruger. The result was the Ruger M77, introduced in 1968—a rifle that combined Sullivan’s forward-thinking design with Ruger’s admiration for the Mauser 98. While it echoed the Mauser in aspects like the twin forward locking lugs and 90-degree bolt lift, the M77 featured original innovations such as a hinged floorplate, a flanged left-side bolt sleeve, and a tang safety. Notably, Sullivan advocated for investment casting in both the receiver and bolt—an unconventional choice at the time that allowed Ruger to reduce production costs while maintaining durability. Although its initial reception was modest, the M77 ultimately became one of America’s most successful sporting rifles, with over a million units sold over the next two decades.

Over the years, the M77 evolved through multiple variants that kept it relevant to changing markets. The M77 Mark II, introduced in the early 1990s, offered a redesigned bolt, improved safety, and a more consistent trigger system, while the M77 Hawkeye featured modern updates like synthetic stocks, stainless steel construction, and the LC6 trigger. Each iteration of the M77 remained faithful to the original design principles while integrating refinements that kept it competitive in a constantly evolving market.
