Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Model 99A Series A is a modern iteration of one of the most iconic lever-action rifles in American firearms history: the Savage Model 99. Introduced in the late 1970s, the Model 99A Series A carried forward the fundamental design principles that made the original 1899 and 99 models revolutionary, while streamlining certain features for more cost-effective production and broader market appeal. Built around Savage's innovative hammerless rotary magazine and cocking indicator, the Model 99 was one of the first lever-action rifles capable of safely chambering high-pressure spitzer (pointed) cartridges—something tube-fed lever guns could not do safely. The 99A Series A, specifically, was designed with a straight-grip walnut stock and blued steel finish, giving it a more traditional appearance compared to the pistol-grip variants. It typically featured a detachable magazine rather than the classic rotary system, a change that made reloading more convenient for some users but also marked a shift away from one of the Model 99's signature innovations.

Mechanically, the Model 99A Series A retained much of what made the original 99 such a beloved hunting rifle: strong, reliable action; excellent balance; and a reputation for accuracy and durability. Chambered in popular calibers such as .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, and .300 Savage, the rifle was well-suited for North American big game hunting, particularly deer and black bear. While it sacrificed some of the refinements and aesthetic flourishes of earlier pre-war Model 99s—such as the rotary magazine with round counter and more finely figured stocks—the 99A Series A offered solid performance in a rugged, no-nonsense package. It bridged the gap between classic craftsmanship and modern utility, and it remains a favorite among those who appreciate lever-actions with centerfire capabilities. Though no longer in production, the Model 99A Series A represents a closing chapter in the history of Savage’s groundbreaking lever gun legacy, and its practical design continues to earn respect from hunters and collectors alike.
